EOTO - SMS Messaging

The EOTO presentations were very interesting as we were able to learn so much history about products that we use in our everyday lives. Each group and each presenter was able to teach me at least one thing I did not know about a device/product. One form of media I want to talk about today is about SMS or text messaging.

Every day you see humans holding their cell phones with them everywhere they go. A lot of us can’t leave the house without it in hand. So when SMS messaging became a thing in 1992 people went crazy. I had no clue how this messaging was developed as Julia went on to present that the SMS concept was first developed (1984) and the first text message was sent on   December 3rd, 1992 from Neil Papworth who was a former developer at Sema Group Telecoms. Mobile phones did not have keyboards at the time, so Papworth had to type the message of a PC.

When Julia went on to present the pros and cons of SMS messaging one thing that stood out to me were the cons. Her list of cons was presented as: Creates a loss of presence in everyday activities, Constant feeling of “FOMO” (Fear of Missing Out), Decreases attention span, and Constant feeling of urgency. So much of our lives today are consumed by our phones. A lot of people rather text someone than go meet up and talk or even just call. FOMO or fear of missing out is a big one in today’s world that I 100% think SMS has had a role in. Although there are negatives to SMS messaging I do believe it is positive overall as they outweigh the bad aspects of it.
